What is breast augmentation?
Breast augmentation (augmentation mammoplasty) is the surgical placement of silicone implants to increase the volume, improve the shape, and enhance the symmetry of the breasts. It is one of the most performed aesthetic procedures worldwide, and when carried out by an expert surgeon it produces results that are natural-looking, proportionate to the body, and long-lasting. Breast augmentation is chosen by women who are unhappy with naturally small breasts, by those who have lost breast volume after pregnancy or weight loss, or by patients seeking to correct breast asymmetry.
Dr. Galati's approach to breast augmentation is founded on thorough pre-operative planning: biometric measurements of the chest wall and breast base, assessment of skin quality and existing breast tissue, and a collaborative implant selection process that takes into account both your anatomical parameters and your aesthetic goals. The result should not look "augmented" — it should look like the best version of your natural breast shape.
Implant types and incision options
- Round implants: add volume to both the upper and lower poles; excellent for patients seeking more cleavage or who have deflated post-pregnancy breasts
- Anatomical (tear-drop) implants: shaped to mimic the natural breast — fuller in the lower pole, tapered toward the top; ideal for very subtle, natural results
- Inframammary incision: the most common approach; placed in the crease beneath the breast, offering excellent access and a hidden scar
- Periareolar incision: around the lower edge of the areola; well-hidden but slightly higher risk of nipple sensitivity changes
- Transaxillary incision: through the armpit; no scar on the breast, but more limited surgical access
- Implant placement: submuscular (below the pectoralis muscle), dual-plane (partially below the muscle), or subglandular (above the muscle) — selected based on breast tissue volume and anatomy
The surgical procedure
Breast augmentation is performed under general anaesthesia and takes approximately 60–90 minutes. Most patients are discharged the same day or after one overnight stay. A pocket is carefully dissected in the chosen plane, the implant is placed and centred, and the incision is closed in multiple layers. A supportive surgical bra is worn immediately after surgery. Only CE-marked, third-generation high-cohesion silicone gel implants from established manufacturers are used.
Recovery timeline
- Days 1–3: moderate chest tightness, managed with analgesics; rest essential
- Day 7–10: drains removed if placed; able to shower and resume light activities
- Day 10–14: sutures removed; return to desk work possible for most patients
- Week 3–4: discomfort resolved; gentle walking encouraged
- Week 6: underwired bras and light sport can be resumed
- Month 3: implants have settled into position; result clearly visible
- Month 6–12: final, fully natural-looking result as soft tissues relax
A supportive sports bra should be worn for at least 6 weeks. Heavy lifting and strenuous upper-body exercise must be avoided for 6 weeks post-surgery.

Frequently asked questions
Implant size is selected during a dedicated pre-operative visit using sizers and digital simulation. Dr. Galati measures your breast base width and existing tissue to identify volumes that will produce a natural, proportionate result.
Round implants add fullness in both the upper and lower poles. Anatomical (tear-drop) implants mimic the natural breast shape — fuller below and tapered toward the top — for a very natural look. Dr. Galati recommends the best option based on your anatomy and aesthetic goals.
Modern high-cohesion silicone gel implants have no fixed expiry date. They do not need to be replaced unless a complication occurs (such as capsular contracture or rupture) or you choose to change size. Many patients keep their implants for 15–20 years without issues.
In most cases, yes. Inframammary and axillary incisions do not interfere with mammary glands or milk ducts. Discuss your plans for future pregnancies at the consultation so incision placement can be optimised.
